Quarter 5
Midwifery Care 4: Labor and Birth (6.0 credits): A continuation of the midwifery care courses, this course includes an in-depth study of midwifery management of the normal processes of all stages of labor, birth, and care of the mother and neonate in the immediate postpartum period, with an emphasis on preparing students for out-of hospital birth. Prerequisite: Midwifery Care 3.
Clinical Skills 3 (1.0 credit): Continuation of the clinical skills series. Students learn perineal suturing, simulation of cervical exam, rupture of membranes, hand maneuvers for receiving the baby, estimated blood loss and treating postpartum hemorrhage. Prerequisite: Clinical Skills 2
Counseling for the Childbearing Year 3 (1.0 credit): A continuation of the counseling courses, this course covers issues specific to preparation for labor, in particular for women with a history of sexual abuse. Prerequisite: Counseling 2.
Professional Issues Seminar 2: The Rise of the Modern Midwife in North America(3.0 credits): The second section of PI Seminar includes the contemporary history of midwifery’s struggle to re-establish itself within the current medical environment, including the development of direct-entry and nurse-midwifery professional organizations. Prerequisite: Professional Issues Seminar 1.
Clinical Seminar (1.5 credits): All clinical seminars include onsite time when students debrief clinical experiences. Students will learn how to integrate theoretical knowledge with midwifery practice. Learning activities include case presentations, charting and case management exercises, and projects to develop cultural competency and knowledge of community resources. This quarter includes a Library Tutorial to help hone data collection and library research skills in preparation for writing a Senior Paper.
Practicum (4.0 credits): Theoretical coursework is complemented by clinical rotations with practitioners providing midwifery and related women’s health care. For more information, see the Clinical Preceptorships page.
