Financing your Midwifery Education
Thinking about how you might pay for your midwifery education is one step in making your dream of becoming a midwife a reality.
Financial issues are one of the top reasons students leave the program. You will need to plan carefully as you get ready to apply for the midwifery program.
Our program is very rigorous and it is near impossible to work full time while enrolled as a student. Some students are able to work part time their first year. However, once you start practicum (clinical experience), you will be on-call for your preceptor. At this point, it is pretty difficult to maintain even part time work unless you have a VERY flexible work schedule or are self-employed in a field that has flexible work hours. Prospective students should plan to not work once their 5th quarter has begun.
Expenses in addition to tuition and fees might include: books, equipment, a reliable computer, a reliable internet connection, (once you start practicum) a pager, a reliable car, childcare, transportation to Seattle for onsites, room and board during onsites.
Financial Aid
If you are considering applying and would like more information about financing your midwifery education, please visit the Bastyr Financial Aid page.
It is our experience that financial aid alone won’t cover all expenses of being a student in the midwifery program.
Other Funding Opportunities
Click here for a list of funding opportunities for our midwifery students. Be creative and resourceful when looking for scholarships! Think about organizations you or family members belong to (even credit unions!). Do you have any special interests? Are you a “non-traditional student “ (i.e. you are over 25)? Are you making a career change? There are scholarships that fit many of these categories. The Bastyr Financial Aid department is
also a good resource when looking for other funding opportunities.
